On May 10 to 12th 2015 the academic network Algorithms as Devices of Power and Valuation gathered 20 scholars from Sweden, Denmark, U.K., Holland, and the U.S. We worked intensely at the rim of the Stockholm archipelago with presentations on, discussions about and attempts to start theorizing on algorithms in society.
The discussion was organized in four themes aimed at different aspects of algorithms as valuation devices:
- Sorting and valuing things with algorithms
- Objectivity vs value-ladedness
- Inclusions/exclusions and algorithms
- Valuing algorithms (How do people grapple with what is a good/bad algorithm?)
